STARTING AND CHARGING SYSTEM TEST. INCLUDES: ALTERNATOR OUTPUT, CHARGE BATTERY AND LOAD TEST TO MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS.
Connected a scan tool and found code P0304 – Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected. Inspected the ignition system and found no obvious faults. Connected an inline spark tester to the ignition coil, ran the engine and found the coil did not produce a steady spark. Attached a lab scope with an inductive ammeter to the ignition coil control circuit, ran the engine, and monitored the ignition coil primary amperage waveform on the lab scope. The ignition coil primary amperage waveform monitored on the lab scope indicated the ignition coil was shorted. These test results verified the ignition coil was faulty. Upon further inspection found ignition coils saturated in engine oil due to spark plug tube seals leaking. Recommend replacing all coils due to age and both valve covers (spark plug tube seals part of valve cover).

Measured the voltage across the battery terminals and found the measured voltage was below the specified range. Connected a battery charger to the battery, charged the battery and continued to diagnose the system. Used an alternator load tester to test the alternator by placing the battery under load, raised the engine speed and found the measured alternator output was within specifications. Used a battery conductance tester to test the battery and found the battery was unable to conduct the specified amount of current, which verified it was defective. These test results verified the battery and battery cable terminal were faulty.
